Helmut Walcha (1907-1991) was one of the most important Bach organists of the 20th century. This recording of The Art of the Fugue is a new, re-mastered edition of the original Archiv recording, which was released on LP, recorded by Walcha in Alkmaar, Holland, at the St. Laurenskerk, in 1956. This document is doubly noteworthy: not only does it offer an exceptional interpretation by the German organist, but it was also the first stereo recording made by Archiv in its glorious and pioneering series on early music. Fully respecting Bach's autograph, Walcha leaves the 4-Part Fugue incomplete, ending his performance at measure 239 where Bach had left the work rather than making use of material composed by other authors. Also in this double-CD set, two other famous Bach works for organ: Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 and the "Passacaille" and Fugue in C minor BWV 582, recorded in 1947 and 1952 respectively.
