Stupendous is not a word used lightly but having just watched the DVD Around The Wanamaker Organ In 80 Minutes. It is the only word that I can think of which attempts to emphasize the scale, diversity and craftsmanship of this National Treasure.
I was unprepared for the size of the organ lofts and the complexity of the instrument. The technical understanding required to retain the functionality of this engineering and tonal masterpiece and the superb standard of current maintenance also came as great surprise. The sound of this organ is incomparable and we are privileged to hear it probably producing the best sound since it was built.
Copies of the DVD sold out very quickly earlier this year. Im glad I waited for the further issue. For an organ enthusiast the DVD is a rare treat and does justice to the love and commitment many have given to the organ over the years. I now have a further ambition, to visit and listen to the golden sound of The Symphonic Wanamaker again.
