Frederick Hohman is an organist and composer from South Bend, Indiana. Since 1986 Fred has also produced a prodigious number of organ and choral recordings and videos on the Pro Organo label. Many of these recordings have been made using electronics he designed himself, and feature some of the largest organs in the United States. Running a record company is more than a full-time job, but Hohman also maintains an active career as a concert organist. Recently he played a recital on the huge organ at Cadet Chapel at West Point, and returned for his 10th year as Permanent Adjudicator and Festival Artist at the Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival in Connecticut.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, with a background in both classical music and jazz, Hohman took the Performer's Certificate and all academic degrees (Mus.B., MM, and DMA) with David Craighead at the Eastman School of Music. In 1984, he won First Prize in both the Arthur Poister Organ Competition as well as the Eighth National Organ-Playing Competition (Mader Foundation, Pasadena, California). His 1986 doctoral essay and first CD recordings centered upon the symphonic organ era and Edwin Lemare, but his broader discography, which draws frequent airplay and editorial from broadcasters and music critics in America and England, reveals his expertise in all areas of organ literature.
