The resident organist of the Dallas Symphony demonstrates her intimate knowledge of the Fisk company's Opus 100, one of the most important organs built in the 20th century. With a wide variety of French sounding resources at her disposal, Preston plays three large suites written for the French symphonic organ. Saint Mark's Cathedral organist Mel Butler plays a program of French music, from de Grigny to Tournemire. Although it is a Dutch organ, the 1965 Flentrop is surprisingly well-suited to French repertoire. With an abundance of reeds, beautiful flutes and six seconds of reverberation, the organ renders French music in an highlyeffective, if not authentic style. Mel Butler lives a superb performance, which is captured with our proprietary 24-bit recording technology. Highly recommended! This recording brings together a splendid tapestry of music from the Franco-Belgian tradition, including traditional Gregorian chant, monody from the Notre Dame Conductus which flourished in Paris circa 1200, and the medieval "Messe de Tournai." This music is paired with the excerpts from the Pentecost Mass for organ by Olivier Messiaen, the 20th century Roman Catholic mystic; also Messiaen's choral motet, "O Sacrum Convivium," and music from the Cathedral's 53-bell carillon.

Colin Andrews, a large Fisk organ, and the acoustics of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, NC, are the ideal ensemble for Messiaen’s most popular organ work, the Ascension Suite, and his evocative Mass for Pentecost.
