The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass
Sigrid Johnson, associate conductor
Charles Kemper, piano
Monroe Crossing Bluegrass Quintet

VocalEssence Ensemble Singers
Philip Brunelle, conductor

Minnesota composer Carol Barnett offers this unusual Mass setting in more-or-less classical style, orchestrated with Bluegrass instruments. The result is tailor-fit for VocalEssence a vocal ensemble which has made a reputation for first-rate performances of this type of crossover music. This CD also includes ten American choral masterpieces spanning the centuries, including Randall Thompson, William Billings, Libby Larsen, Stephen Paulus, Ned Rorem, Eric Whitacre and others.

This CD is in the enhanced format, which includes the audio recording plus program notes, texts and biographies in PDF format which are accessible when put into a computer. Plays in a standard CD player.

The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass brought out the best in both ensembles. The sophisticated choral sound and the jubilant bluegrass harmonies made the text come alive.

5 of 5 Another opinion July 18, 2011

Since my wife and I commissioned the mass, I am admittedly biased. But I was distressed to see that there is only one (negative) review here.

I suggest that an interested person check the Amazon listing for the CD for a completely different opinion (and a couple of others).

2 of 5 Not For Me May 22, 2009
Reviewer: Thomas  from Columbus, GA United States
This music on this CD is well-performed and is done so with care and commitment.
All in all though, it is not for me.  I find A Bluegrass Mass to be quite contrived and trying a bit too hard, and I confess that this type of music would never be a part of my worship experience.  As for this CD, the music is, to my ears, simply not worth hearing.

The Billings was a delight, and it was refreshing.  The pieces by Randall Thompson and Ned Rorem made the other 20th century pieces sound very lightweight and uninspired.  I wish that I could be more enthusiastic, but this disc is a winner for the Billings, Thompson, and Rorem only.
